Unique Characteristics of Social
Media
Internet has
changed people’s lifestyle as well as habits. Every human has a need and wish
to communicate with others and exchange information, ideas, news etc. Internet
has enabled people across the world to interact with one another. Truly the
internet has erased the barriers between nations. Social media is growing
everyday there is hardly anybody that isn’t participating in one or other type
of social media be it exchanging emails, using chat or posting photographs and
exchanging music.
Participation social media encourages
contributions and feedback from everyone who is interested. It blurs the line
between media and audience.
Openness Most social media services are open
to feedback and participation. Comments and sharing information. They are
rarely any barriers to accessing and making use of content (password protected
content is frowned upon)
Conversation whereas traditional media is about
“broadcast” (content transmitted or distributed to an audience) social media is
seen as a two way conversation.
Community social media allows communities to
form quickly and communicate effectively. Communities share common interests,
such as a love of photography and cars, a political issue or favorite TV show.
Connectedness most kinds of social media thrive on
their connectedness making use of links to different sites, and resources. Such
as Blogs Wikipedia’s and forums.
Disadvantages of the Internet Messages can be caught up in
commercial noise. Harder to gauge participation and commitment. Not as
effective as a face to face conversation. User drop-out. Hits do not necessarily indicate attitude change.
Social media is not as connecting as a face to face conversation, and can cause confusion since the true emotion of the person can not be seen. However, a sense of community can be quickly formed upon contacting with people all over the world. - Harley
